    an international one he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

    The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

    With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the
    ALP.

    However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4 per
    cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

    LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has
    lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.

    “We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,”
    he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.

    The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday,
    cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.

    If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its large euro zone
    peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic
    product.

    Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to
    try to return the economy to growth.

    “After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”

    Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to
    put them back in order where necessary.

    “I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
    “What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”

    Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had
    not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would
    do so on Monday evening.

    “We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,”
    Lindner said.

    “We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

    Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
    There may have been other things on the menu,
    but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to
    be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
    Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
    But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to
    swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty –
    dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a
    stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by
    the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
    The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
    They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
    Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
    croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
    Next door, a large table fills with a glut
    of the noisily, glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
    effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we
    would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study
    in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of
    oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.

    Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.

    But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat
    this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the
    problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
    croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
    Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.

    Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
    A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them
    to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is
    ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
    I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t.

    the vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

    to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30

    The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
    00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had

  164. LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI)
    on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
    roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive
    for its competitors in the short term.

    The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two
    thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products
    by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from
    a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

    Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it
    from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists
    across a host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.

    Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities
    in two unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch
    would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

    The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025, he continued.

    “We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial
    launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

    A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases,
    he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first
    year would make sense.

    Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
    “now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies,
    said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

    Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products
    was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from
    sales of such products by 2025.

    Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

    PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue
    and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

    ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
    would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

    working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory
    and operating environment in the country

    has discontinued sale of several cigarette
    products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

    It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as
    related investment of $150 million.

    Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations

    thinks its iQOS smokeless tobacco product can make Britain a
    country of non-smokers in coming years, an executive said
    on Friday.

    Since iQOS was launched in the UK in December, Philip Morris has found that about 70 percent of users are able to give up cigarettes, Peter Nixon, its UK and
    Ireland managing director, told BBC Radio. That compares with only about 15-20
    percent of people who use e-cigarettes, he said.

    “It’s unprecedented,” Nixon told the Today show. “We’re very encouraged that products like iQOS are the absolute game changer.”

    Whereas e-cigarettes use nicotine-laced liquid, IQOS heats
    tobacco sticks, called Heets, to a high enough temperature to create a vapour but
    not smoke.

    Philip Morris, which has Marlboro cigarettes among its global brands, has applied to U.S.

    health regulators to have iQOS recognised as having “modified risk”
    compared with cigarettes.

    British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco are also selling tobacco-based “vaping” devices, but so far Philip Morris is
    in the lead.

    The company sells about 7 billion Heets a year, which is tiny compared with the 820 billion conventional cigarettes it sells.
    But Nixon told the BBC that the company hopes to produce 100 billion Heets next year,
    a huge jump from the less than 400 million it made in 2015.

    “We’re absolutely serious. One day we want to stop selling cigarettes,” Nixon said on the programme.
    “We’re moving very fast.”

    There are still 7.5 million smokers in Britain, Nixon said,
    and Philip Morris has hired “freelancers” to help
    to bring that number down. These freelancers act like quitting coaches and
    can earn 50 pounds ($64.95) from Philip Morris for every
    person they convert from cigarettes to iQOS.

    Lady Gaga puts on a loved-up display with her fiancé Michael Polansky at Joker premiere

    Polansky is a 2006 graduate of Harvard University and runs Napster founder Sean Parker’s Parker Group.

    Throughout their years dating, Gaga and Polansky have attended the Super Bowl , the BAFTAs, and
    the Critics Choice Awards together.

    Lady Gaga and Michael reportedly decided to go their separate ways
    in early 2023 due to the singer-songwriter wanting marriage and children and the tech executive not being ready to take those steps.

    The pair reportedly had an amicable dissolution to their coupling, and
    remained friends.

    Then, in August 2023 they were spotted together for the first time in more than a year.

    The singer has always been open about her
    desire to have a big family and in 2013, she told Sirius XM radio she wants ‘at least three kids’.

    She said: ‘I wanna have tons of kids. I think at least three.
    I really want to have a family. I really
    want to have a family, I really want to nurture my children.

    ‘Having my own kids will be like having three little monsters with me all the time.
    They probably won’t be fans, they will probably hate my music – who knows.

    Elsewhere, Gaga opened up about her love for fiancé Michael
    Polansky in a candid interview with Vogue

    Gaga – real name Stefani Germanotta – told how it was actually
    her mother Cynthia who met him first and thought he was perfect for her daughter, telling the singer: ‘I think
    I just met your husband!’

    ‘I want to have a family, I want a family life. I grew up with a very strong family and I can’t imagine not having a normal nuclear family.’

    She also expressed the desire to start a family with Michael, 46, back in 2021
    after their relationship started heating up.

    ‘She has been telling her friends that she wants to get through a few projects and then focus on settling down,’ a source told Entertainment Tonight
    at the time.

    ‘Gaga wants to have children one day and sees a
    future with Michael.’

    The entertainer had two previous engagements that were called off.
